My First Lesson

Taking your first lesson is just the start of your journey here at Great Island Riding Academy! Just like any sport, the right equipment matters. We expect our riders to be responsible for their equipment and take pride in being a student at Great Island Riding Academy.

For your first lesson, please wear a pair of long pants and closed-toe shoes. Riding helmets will be provided.

Suggested Equipment

We have a large "Take a Pair, Leave a Pair" Section! Check there before buying

HELMETS

All riders under the age of 18 are required to wear a helmet when riding.

While we provide helmets, many riders prefer to purchase their own, though, we do not recommend Troxel helmets. Any student with long hair should keep it pulled back during their lesson.

RIDING PANTS

It is recommended that students taking regular riding lessons wear riding pants and purchase their own riding helmet and gloves. Riding pants should have underpasses to prevent them from riding up.

GLOVES

Gloves are recommended for all riders. They help small riders hold the reins and prevent sore hands. Once a student has graduated to holding two reins, they should wear their riding gloves every lesson.

BOOTS

It is important that you wear closed-toe shoes during your lessons.

Students taking regular lessons should have riding boots with a heel and wear them every lesson.

GREAT ISLAND GEAR

Interested in having your own Great Island gear? We work with multiple clothing distributors to provide options for logo wear.

STIRRUPS

Once riders start taking regular lessons, we recommend that they purchase a pair of stirrups. Students on the Academy show team are required to have their own stirrups for horse shows.
