ACADEMY TEAM

For students interested in competing at horse shows but not quite ready for horse ownership, the Great Island Academy Team is a great place to start! Academy shows are entry-level competition for novice riders to gain experience in the show ring on lesson horses.

At Academy horse shows, riders typically compete in two classes - Equitation and horsemanship. Equitation classes are based on the rider's form and skills like navigating the show ring. Horsemanship classes are judged on the rider's ability to control and show their horse, including speed, collectiveness of the horse, and ring placement.
